Oliver contemplates his skating prowess

Peggy's Cove, where the snow meets the sea. On the weekend just passed we drove 40 minutes to this beautiful spot just out of town. Cold does not go anywhere near describing how ... um ... invigorating it was. With the wind blowing of the Atlantic Ocean this was no place for a leisurely dip! It is a  summer hot spot for tourists but it was spectacular in winter and pretty empty. We tucked into some lobster for lunch then went and checked out the local lobster industry. The fella Oliver is holding was for sale at $21.

Bedford Basin in the background

Who'd have thought that a walk to school could be so much fun? The kids in the neighbourhood gather across the road from our house and together walk the 10 minute route to school. On snowy or icy mornings (read: every morning) steep inclines are hazardous but it doesn't slow this crowd up. Snowballs are also a significant hazard and it tends to be the Arctic Fox boys who hurl them. Yep, it's all fun until it ends in tears!

Interestingly, Bedford Basin, which comes into view on the final stretch to school (see above) was filled with navy boats during WW2. I saw a photo with as many as 150 warships on this body of water forming a convoy headed for action in Europe. Halifax is steeped in military history and remains a strong military post.

Last weekend the Foxes 4 headed to The Commons, a public space where Haligonians go to skate for free. Nothing is ever for free really - the price Charlie paid was loss of feeling in her toes for a good while as we all braved minus 19 degrees temperatures in the name of recreation. No number of falls (and there were lots!) was going to dampen Oliver's enthusiasm. He has never smiled to constantly. Dan wasn't going to play second fiddle - he circumnavigated the course several times himself. Mum and Dad are still in risk-asessment phase before donning the skates.

Anyway, both boys have bonza bruises to remember the day by ... and they can't wait to get out again this weekend.

I'd much sooner freeze than  do my homework!
Greetings to The Fox Files. This post is just me exploring how to ride this animal. If you read it please let me know.

Thanks.
